Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Ruacana-Epupa +/- 175km (5hrs)

After breakfast, we travel along the wild Kunene river past Swartboois Drif until we reach the famous Epupa Falls early afternoon. The beautiful and scenic campsite will allow for a walk to Epupa Falls, swimming or guided tour to learn more about the traditional Himba tribe, or simply relax under the Makalani palm trees.

Day 2: Epupa – Van Zyl’s Pass +/- 170km (8hrs)

Today we back-track for 75km and then drive the rocky trail towards the well-known and famous Van Zyl’s Pass. Travelling will be extremely slow until we ‘crawl’ down the adrenalin rush-creating Van Zyl’s Pass and reach the beautiful Marienfluss. The mountains open up into a more savannah-like landscape with lots of oryx, springbuck, and ostrich. Here we will set up ‘wild’ camp overlooking the Desert.

Day 3: Van Zyl’s Pass – Kunene Waterfall +/-120km (7hrs)

After breakfast we travel North towards Kunene River through Hartmanns Valley until we reach the ‘Point-of-no-return’, where the northern dune fields separate us from the Atlantic Ocean. From here we enter- and travel through the dunes until we reach Kunene waterfall, where we camp at the river with lovely water-pools and scenery for plenty photographic opportunities.

Day 4:

We will also be spent at the mighty Kunene river with a joyride into the dunes bordering the Kunene. The dune drive will conquer some massive dunes with some amazing scenery along the Kunene. This is the most remote place in the whole of Namibia and really spectacular and untouched piece of nature.

Day 5: Kunene Waterfall – Khumib Valley

We travel south on the western Hartmann Valley route along the edge of the dunes past the ‘Groen drom’ and enter the moon mountains after visiting the Ogams fountain. Some awesome spectacular granite mountains eroded by wind and sand, where we will seek a beautiful campsite overlooking the Khumib Valley.

Day 6: Khumib Valley – Hoarusib River – Hoanib River – Elephant Song

Today we explore the ‘tropical’ rivers in search of Desert elephants, as well as the desert lions. Giraffes, springbuck, ostrich and oryx live in these dry riverbeds which are home to some of the biggest Ana trees you have ever seen.

We venture a little in the Khumib river and enter the Hoarusib river canyon at the Clay Castles, then across the Ganias Flats and enter the Hoanib river near Amspoort. From here we travel up the river past ‘presidents waterhole’ and set up camp near Elephants Song in the river. This is elephant and lion territory…

Day 7: Elephant Song – Sesfontein - Warm Quelle (Ongongo)

Our last day will take us up the Hoanib river to Sesfontein where we refuel and then travel to Warmquelle (Ongongo) where we spend our last evening at this beautiful campsite and enjoy a swim in the natural warm spring.

Day 8:

After breakfast, we pack up, say goodbye, but not before planning the next exciting trip in mother nature with Desert Magic Tours!
